Most Marx collectors are familiar with the dump unit for the 567 New York Central side dump
car. This one was found with the original chute to direct the "coal" away from the car and
track. There should also be a collection bin which was formed from the tooling for the base
of either the Grand Central Station or a large airport. Used upside down, it does not have
the holes punched for the building or signs, and does not appear to have the rolled edge
which is why I am uncertain what tooling was used. Apparently the bin, ramp and a shovel have
been reproduced.
This is the shovel which also came with the dump unit in train sets. One must wonder why
the ramp, bin and shovel are so much harder to find than the dump units! There are at least
two, and possibly three, sizes of the shovel.
Here's a picture of the set.
This advertisement, from the 1941 Montgomery Ward catalogue, shows one of the Pennsylvania Coal Traion Sets.
Above are some bags of coal that might be Marx. I have heard that Marx coal was actually
black licorice which would explain why it is so rare!
