This is an early Joy Line freight set with blue frames.
The hard-to-find cast iron electric
engine heads up the consist. This set would date to about 1931 and should probably include the 351 Koal Kar tender. I believe the sets with the cast iron engines are the first Joy Line sets really made
for running on track but this is only a gut feeling.
This view shows the collector on the motor unique to this engine. Every example of this engine I have observed has the collector
soldered in place. I am not sure whether this is factory correct or was a common repair.
Gary Mocko sent this picture of an intact collector which leads one to believe that these engines left the factory this way. It is interesting that so many seem to be snapped off and soldered back in place almost identically!
